Everything about substance use at RijnmondFit!
Former Olympian and Gezond010 ambassador Patrick van Luijk was a guest on Monday, January 25, for the fourth time in a row on Rijnmond’s new radio program: RijnmondFit, hosted by Erik Lemmers! Gezond010 and Rijnmond will help all Rotterdam residents on their way to a healthy and vital lifestyle throughout the month of January. Via radio, TV and the website, various health experts from Gezond010 and our own Patrick van Luijk gave tips on nutrition, exercise and mental well-being. The fourth and final broadcast of this series focused on substance use!

Is coffee good for you?
Coffee? For some, the day cannot start well without caffeine. For Patrick, however, it is different: “I rarely drink it,” says Patrick. “That’s because I once took a DNA test, which showed that my liver does not digest coffee well.” Patrick also explains how caffeine blocks the receptors in your brain and the substance adenosine, so you don’t get the feeling of sleeping.

Tips to quit smoking
The cigarette was also discussed during the broadcast on Monday, January 25. “The cigarette is no longer the cigarette of the past,” says Robert Wei from PLUHZ. “Nowadays there are as many as 100 additions. You are no longer only addicted to tobacco, but also to the other substances added to cigarettes. Every person has the need to reward themselves 14 to 20 times [in a day]. Many smokers reward themselves with a cigarette and that makes quitting smoking so difficult.” But what can you do to quit smoking?

Robert’s tips: “You really have to consciously make the step that you WANT to quit cigarettes. Involve your environment in this, because that support is extremely important and make a plan, think of something positive. When the urge for a cigarette arises, take a walk, call a friend or eat an apple, for example. Make a list of 10 positive things you can do when you feel like smoking a cigarette. If you do that preparation, you will go a long way.”

What impact does alcohol have on your body?
A nice glass of wine…sometimes it doesn’t stop there, but did you know that alcohol is related to all kinds of cancer? “Henriette Cuperus from Antes Care: “To get the alcohol out of your body, your liver has to work very hard. In addition, alcohol consumption is related to various forms of cancer. And because of the empty calories and amounts of sugar, you can also get a beer belly and be overweight!” “Does it matter which drink you want to quit? Beer, gin, vodka, wine?” asks Erik. “Drink wine and beer rather than spirits, because spirits have even more impact,” Henriette concludes.

Henriëtte’s tips and tricks
“…write down why you want to drink less and share it with your partner, family and friends. It can give you support and prevent you from being encouraged by those around you. Think in advance what you are going to do in difficult moments and then go for a walk or jump rope, for example. Whatever you like!”

FitVideo and healthy recipe
During the RijnmondFit series, attention was paid weekly not only to exercise, but of course also to healthy nutrition. That is why there was a new healthy recipe from Gezond010 partner every week in January Movedis online at the Rijnmond website.

Don’t forget to watch the FitVideos with Patrick! Such as the video about Standing up one-legged! Try to stand or sit with one leg each time. Do you want to know how to do this exercise? watch the video here.

Finally, Patrick concluded the last RijnmondFit broadcast with a golden tip: “If you don’t REALLY want it, there are always obstacles and if you REALLY want it, there are solutions.”
