The official opening of the ErasMusicLab of Music as Medicine took place on Friday, June 2, 2023. PhD students Antonia Becker and Emy van der Valk Bouman organized the festive opening in collaboration with the Neurosciences department of Erasmus MC. By cutting a ribbon with surgical scissors, Prof. Jeekel and Dr. Klimek officially the ErasMusicLab. Dr. Klimek then informed those present about the background and purpose of the ErasMusicLab: researching the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of music, as with any medicine, where Music as Medicine aims to find out which music works for which patient in which situation. After this presentation, small group tours took place to the lab, where guests could see the lab’s measuring equipment and test it themselves.

Mechanism of action of music

With the opening of the ErasMusicLab, researchers Antonia Becker and Emy van der Valk Bouman have started to set up studies that, among other things, will investigate the mechanism of action of music. Measuring Heart Rate Variability (HRV), as a parameter of the autonomic nervous system and indicator for the physical stress response, plays an important role in this. The Music as Medicine research group works together with BioCheck for this. PhD students Emy and Antonia also recently participated in the event ‘Vital Human Capital’ to obtain more detailed information on this subject.
