Work stress is the main cause of more than a third of work-related absenteeism. The costs for this absence rose to 2018 billion euros in 3,1 (source: Trimbos). So there is every reason to ensure that employees feel good about themselves and do not drop out. Precisely for that reason, Innovation and Partnerships Manager Nathalie Popken of Erasmus MC started a collaboration with health organization BioCheck.
In short, BioCheck is for anyone who is unable to recover well at rest. This can be due to stress, trauma, illness or always being ‘on’. Popken: ‘Recognisable to many of us. That is why we are going to help employees with a prevention program.’ BioCheck Director Patrick van Luijk explains: ‘Employees can measure their recovery capacity on a daily basis via the BioCheck app, among other things. They can also train three times a week with the BioCheck Protocol based on their daily workload. Previous research shows that insight into one’s own data is important for a successful outcome, and we suspect that this will also be the case for prevention.’
A lot of know-how
‘In addition to ErasmusMC and BioCheck, TU Delft is also involved in this program. A great collaboration between three organizations with a lot of know-how that complement each other. Secondly, after rolling out the prevention program, we will conduct a joint study with BioCheck into the effectiveness of the BioCheck program. We are now developing this research, hopefully we will receive a grant or external financing for this,” says Popken.
Van Luijk: ‘We will conduct this joint research in the areas of recovery capacity, breathing and HRV, or variation in heart rate. The aim of this is to give Erasmus MC employees more control over their recovery and energy capacity. We hope that this will lead to a decrease in the perception of work pressure and an increase in energy among employees.’
