BioCheck and Matrix Fitness: powerful partnership

All fitness equipment in the training room at BioCheck is supplied by Matrix Fitness. But the company is much more than a supplier; it is a strategic partner that is involved from the start. Matrix Fitness thus strengthens both BioCheck’s position and its own, say Anne-Marie Kuiper and Bastiaan Pieroelie of Matrix. ‘We learn a lot from each other.’

Bastiaan Pieroelie remembers well when he first met Patrick van Luijk. It must have been sometime in 2016 that top athlete Nadine Broersen introduced Patrick to him during a networking event. “We clicked immediately,” says Bastiaan, who has worked at Matrix Fitness since 2008 as an account and sales manager. ‘Not only because Patrick is a nice guy, but also because I believe in BioCheck’s approach. This approach is based on the vision of Stans van der Poel, with whom we were already in discussions at the time. Stans and Patrick were still pitching their idea at the time. A year later, when they had developed the concept for BioCheck and secured a location, we actually started working together.’

More than just supplying devices

The origins of Matrix Fitness lie in Taiwan, where Peter Lo started the family business Johnson Health Tech (JHT) in 1975. More than forty years later, JHT has almost 30 subsidiaries and 60 partnerships with distributors worldwide. In 2001, the Matrix brand was founded to serve the professional fitness market. Matrix has been active in the Benelux since 2006. “We have gradually started to do much more than just supply top quality devices,” says Anne-Marie Kuiper, Director of Marketing & Customer Service of Matrix Benelux. ‘We are not going to make a difference with our competitors based on those devices. We distinguish ourselves by designing and furnishing spaces. But also by helping with financial issues, staff training, marketing and service.’

Individual central

Bastiaan: ‘We have started to think more and more from the individual. What can we do to help someone achieve their health or fitness goals? We supply traditional gyms and companies and have a good market position in top sports. For example, we recently designed and equipped a Strength & Conditioning center for the national gymnastics association in the Topsportcentrum Rotterdam in collaboration with Rotterdam Topsport. But we also enjoy working a lot with rehabilitation practices, physiotherapists and other health concepts. That is why we are so happy with our partnership with BioCheck.’

Looking for ideal furnishings

The collaboration between BioCheck and Matrix started with the design of the Center of Excellence in The Mark on Fascinatio Boulevard, which opened in October 2017. Walking through the empty space, Bastiaan and Patrick came up with the ideal design while talking and philosophizing. ‘We discussed the concept of BioCheck step by step,’ says Bastiaan. ‘Which spaces do you need? Where do you want to do the tests? What is a good place for moments of rest and breathing therapy? How much space do you need for fitness training?’

Looking at load capacity

‘We also discussed the target group for a long time,’ Bastiaan continues. ‘What can and cannot people with burnout, stress and fatigue complaints do? How resilient are these people and what types of training can they handle? This is how we determined which equipment should be placed in the training room. Think of treadmills with an extended handrail and bicycles with a low step and a low starting wattage. But also cross trainers, because this device is useful for people who get pain when running. With the cross trainer they can still actively use their entire body during training. The strength equipment is set up in such a way that people can move freely. Initially we also had a rowing machine, but the exercises for it turned out to be too intensive. No problem, we’ll take that rowing machine away again. Just as we adjusted more things when BioCheck moved to Shanghailaan. That flexibility is part of the partnership.’

Win-win with a big smile

Another part of the collaboration is promoting each other’s activities. For example, Matrix account managers tell their customers about the Powered by BioCheck program for healthcare providers. This already led to a partnership with FITR Company from Terneuzen. “Conversely, Patrick’s location is a nice calling card for us,” says Anne-Marie. ‘We can show our customers and potential customers how to furnish a space. But also how BioCheck’s programs work, with Patrick as an enthusiastic and inspiring figurehead. We also learn from each other. Patrick hears from us how the market works and can benefit from it. We learn more from him about the treatment of stress, burnout and fatigue. With this knowledge we can distinguish ourselves from our competitors. It’s a win-win situation. A collaboration based on trust and with a big smile!’
